Healing

Well, I've been in this splint for 1½ weeks now, this Friday the doc's going to look at his handiwork and that means the bandages are coming off, if just briefly. For that I'm glad and I will see if I can be put into a smaller one. I really want to move my arm again. It sucks typing with one hand -- it's slow, but I do what I must.

It stings when I move my elbow, but I believe it is the dressings that are the cause, not the wound.

Update

Well, I've finally been told that my operation with be on Monday the 16th at 8:40am MST. :) It's going to be interesting, as I presume I will be in a lot more pain than I am in now. I presume the third phase will be therapy and that's going to be excrutiating. But I need to heal, and I will do what I can to tolerate the pain.

Any words of advice or encouragement would be appreciated. :)

Some pain is to be expected, but please ask for advice re pain relief, I don't think it's necessary for you to be in agony with your injury. Good luck.

Good luck with your operation hun. The main thing that I can suggest is to make sure that they give you something for the pain for when you are at home or to ask them what you can take over the counter. Will send you healing energies on Monday. Hugs.

My injury

07:07 Mar 10 2009

I know I don't write in here much anymore, but I do want people to know that lately with my arm injured, I can't do much. Typing with one hand has been quite a challenge and as slow as I type, I am making the effort to get the facts straight. :)

First fact... I did not cause injury to my arm. It was something else which injured me.

Second fact... No I haven't had surgery yet, however I will within the next few weeks. :) Yay, finally.

Here's what happened.

I was at work doing resets, which are part of what my Team does in various Home Depots in Utah. We had to set one bay which had a big beam at the top that had to be moved down a few notches; it measured 108 inches wide by 5 inches thick... all in all a very heavy beam.

I decided to do it the safe way and had someone help me move it. I believe that is where I went wrong. Normally I do things on my own and in this instance I would have been holding this heavy beam differently, however, with help, I held the beam in a vulnerable fashion.

As my co-worker and I were placing the beam in place, I felt his end drop. Thinking he was just adjusting his end, I averted my eyes from my end over to his and in that short time, the beam kept dropping and pulling my right arm down snapping the three tendons holding my bicep at the elbow.

Basically, the doctors have told me I ruptured my bicep tendon and have to have it operated on so that I can at least regain 80% of my strength in that arm.

I am glad I still have my grip, however my movement is currently severely restricted. Once the surgery is performed, I am predicting a very painful rehabilitation period. Hopefully I will be able to tolerate the pain during therapy, for I know they will force me to move it to regain my lost agility.

I do admit, I have learned a few amazing skills left-handed. I can tie both shoes' laces, can dress myself, cook, do dishes, drive my car on the interstate, keyboard, even am learning to print left-handed (at a grade two level, lol) too.

I don't look at this as a hindrance, for me it is a challenge; a challenge which must be overcome. If others can do it, so can I. :)

Wish me luck. Sure can't wait to type with two hands again.
